In a step that critics have long requested, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will begin checking the safety of some of the riskiest medical devices. Some of these devices--including artificial lung membranes, defibrillators, and various pacemaker components--have been in use since before the FDA's medical safety laws were put into effect in 1976.
