Preventing an Initial Bleeding Episode. About half of patients with mild-to-moderate cirrhosis have esophageal varices (abnormal blood vessels in the esophagus). In such patients the risk for bleeding within 2 years is as high as 35%. Bleeding is fatal in half of these patients.
