A reader wants to know if heart palpitations can be caused by
untreated acid reflux. Dr. Mitchell Hecht says that though reflux
itself is not a cause, palpitations can be caused by many of the
things that also cause heartburn, such as caffeine, stress,
nicotine, and medications. Hecht recommends treatment with acid
blockers like AcipHex, Nexium, and Protonix for reflux and says
that palpitations are usually not a serious health concern.
