Researchers reviewed several studies in which patients taking simvastatin (Zocor), pravastatin (Pravachol), or atorvastatin (Lipitor) added colesevelam (WelChol), an older cholesterol drug. Patients taking both a statin and WelChol had lower cholesterol levels than those taking a statin plus a placebo. Patients also improved their levels of hs-CRP, a protein associated with heart disease. Sankyo, maker of WelChol, funded the research.
