Western diet again linked to heart disease, diabetes risk

The heavy consumption of meats, fried foods, and refined grains that characterizes Westerners' diets puts them at higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a new study has found. Metabolic syndrome is a collection of risk factors for heart problems, stroke and Type 2 diabetes. The finding confirmed previous research with two interesting twists: Drinking diet soda actually ups people's risk of developing metabolic syndrome, while consuming more dairy might have a protective effect.
