The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new blood thinner called Effient, which will compete with the commonly used drug Plavix. Effient--also known as prasugrel--will carry a black box warning label, warning doctors and users about a risk of significant, sometimes fatal, bleeding linked the drug's use. In a statement, FDA officials said Effient should not be used in those with certain bleeding problems, a history of stroke, or an urgent need for surgery.
