Nitrates have been used in the treatment of angina for over 100 years. These drugs release nitric oxide, thereby relaxing the smooth muscles in blood vessels. Many nitrate preparations are available. The most commonly used are nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, and isosorbide mononitrate.
