Poor sleep linked to heart risks for people with hypertension

Japanese researchers have found that people who have hypertension and get less than the recommended amount of sleep are a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. In a recent study, investigators looked at the sleep habits of 1,200 adults with high blood pressure. They found that those who slept for less than 7.5 hours each night were more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke or die of cardiac arrest over a four-year period. So-called "short sleepers"--people who fail to have the blood pressure "dip" that usually occurs overnight--were at the greatest risk.
