Results from a new study suggest that a slightly abnormal "blip" on an electrocardiogram that was formally thought to be insignificant may, in fact, be an early warning sign of heart trouble and signal and increased risk for early death. Researchers found that a lengthening of the PR interval--the right-hand portion of the jagged blip that records electrical activity as the heart beats--was linked to a doubled risk of developing atrial fibrillation, three times the risk of requiring a pacemaker, and one-and-a-half times the risk of early death.
