Heart experts say Americans should cut sugar intake

The American Heart Association (AHA) is urging Americans to severely cut their sugar intake, saying women should not consume more than 100 calories of added sugar a day, while men should limit their intake to no more than 150 calories. "Added sugar" refers to sugar that is added to foods during processing, as people are eating it, or as it is cooked. High sugar consumption has been linked to a number of health conditions, including hypertension, heart disease, and obesity. AHA experts say soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages are the major source of American's added sugar intake.
