Autoimmune condition boost heart attack, stroke risk in women

Women who have an autoimmune disease known as antiphospholipid syndrome are at greatly increased risk for heart attack and stroke, researchers say, and this risk is even greater if they take birth control pills or smoke. For the study, scientists looked at 1,000 young women and found that those with a particular type of antiphospholipid antibody--called lupus anticoagulant--were 43 times more likely to suffer a stroke and five times more likely to have a heart attack than women who didn't have the antibody.
