Researchers say obesity is a major risk factor for left atrial enlargement (LAE)--a heart structure problem that increases the risk of atrial fibrillation, stroke, and death. A 10-year German study on 1,212 men and women found that the highest incidence of LAE occurred in obese patients and those with hypertension. They also found that the damage could happen even in very young obese patients.
