Obesity appears to alter heart structure

(Atlanta Journal Constitution) UPDATED 2009-11-10

Researchers say obesity is a major risk factor for left atrial enlargement (LAE)--a heart structure problem that increases the risk of atrial fibrillation, stroke, and death. A 10-year German study on 1,212 men and women found that the highest incidence of LAE occurred in obese patients and those with hypertension.
