FDA Moves to Reduce Medical Radiation Exposure

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is starting a program designed to reduce patients' exposure to radiation during three types of medical scans: computed tomography, nuclear medicine, and fluoroscopy. FDA officials say these scans--which include such commonplace procedures as CT scans and MRIs--are the greatest contributors to U.S. radiation exposure. The FDA's move will require medical imaging device manufacturers to put safeguards into their machines, promote patient awareness of radiation exposure, and increase informed decision-making about medical procedures between patients and doctors.  Read full story >
