Portuguese-Style Diet May Fight Heart Disease

People who follow a Southern European Atlantic Diet (SEAD)--one associated with Northern Portugal and the region of northwest Spain known as Galicia--may help protect themselves from heart disease, researchers say. This type of diet is characterized by lots of fish (especially cod), red meat, pork, dairy products, legumes, vegetables, potatoes, and wine with meals. In a recent study, people who followed the SEAD diet had a 33 percent lower risk of heart attack than people who did not. And those who followed a modified form of the diet--one that did not include as much red meat, pork, and potatos--had a 60 percent lower heart attack risk.  Read full story >
