Smog Component May Trigger Heart Attacks

Scientists have uncovered the first direct evidence that ozone, a major component of smog, may cause the death of heart cells. The researchers found that several weeks' exposure to ground-level ozone caused rises in markers of inflammation in the animals' bodies and drops in a heart-protective protein. Investigators say the ozone thus made it more likely that cells in the rats' hearts would die.  Read full story >
