Patients Prefer Pills to Chocolate for Lowering Blood Pressure

Australian researchers have found that when given a choice between a pill or a piece of antioxidant-rich chocolate to help control blood pressure, most patients will choose the pill. In their study, investigators noted that high blood pressure patients were more likely to choose a pill of tomato extract or placebo over 50 g of dark chocolate. Patients reported that they "found it hard" to eat this amount of chocolate per day, and 20 percent considered it an "unacceptable" long-term treatment option. The researchers say their finding calls into the question the use of chocolate as medicine, though eating it occasionally might have health benefits.  Read full story >
