Warfarin May Boost Risk of Trauma-Related Death

According to a new study, people who take the blood thinner warfarin have a much higher risk of dying after suffering a traumatic injury. In fact, the researchers found that people taken to emergency rooms after a serious injury who took warfarin--also known as Coumadin--were twice as likely to die than those who did not take the drug. Warfarin in the most commonly used blood thinner in the United States and is very effective in preventing strokes in people with heart disease. But because it is a blood thinner, it can cause internal bleeding after someone is injured.
