Young, athletic, high blood pressure

By kclay Friday, February 01, 2008
I am 20 years old, eat a healthy diet, athletic.  I have had high blood pressure since I was 17.  I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.  I do not fit the profile for high bp or diabetes.  Anyone out there like me?  I continually look for info., but most suggest losing weight and getting active.  Any information would be appreciated!

Hi kclay - thanks for posting to our blog.  I'm a moderator for this site and though not medically trained, I hope to direct you towards the information you need.

First, although you are probably up on all  of the general info on high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes  , you may want to read our text on the basics.

As well , you migh tbe intersted in our section for younger people who have diabetes

I hope this helps a bit.  Post back if you ahve more questions or maybe you found out other info you want to share with our bloggers.

I have a similar history, without the diabetes. I run, (am currently training for my second 1/2 marathon), have a BMI of 22 and a resting HR of 48...but my BP has been 140/80 since I was 12 (I'm now 24)! No doctor has been able to explain it yet. Who knows. Its frustrating though.
