OK, I must admit it wasn't until a few years ago I began to understand the true power of antioxidants. I always figured as long as I have my daily "alphabet vitamins" all would be well. A few years ago, after having family members diagnosed with all different types of cancer & heart disease, I kept hearing talk of these things called "free radicals". Funny thing to me was, the word "free" is always equal to something good....i.e free dinner, free day at the spa, free time :) Then I had to remember the good old saying, "Nothing in life is free...".
Free radicals in a nutshell damages & detroys molecules & cells. Your body creates some free radicals to fight viruses & disease. Free radicals are also in our daily living (pollution, cigarette smoke, etc). Being overweight & lack of exercise also increase free radicals in our body. The problem comes when there's an overload of these radicals good cells will become damaged. My thought "OH NO! If free radicals are basically in the air we breathe how can you not get overloaded?" Those good ole "alphabet vitamins" contained the answer; Antioxidants!!! Antioxidants, like Vitamin C & E, seek out & destroy these free radicals. They are our bodies own superhero. Fruits & vegetables are the best source of antioxidants. Most of us don't get the daily amount of antioxidants we need in our diets. So many of the world also use supplements like vitamins, drinks, etc to get their daily dose of superhero strength.
Antioxidants help fight aging, can reduce risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, cholesterol issues, liver damage, boost you immune system, increase energy, improve eye health, etc, etc, etc. Reducing free radicals in your body can also improve mental health. There are some powerful fruits in the stores today that have high antioxidants levels like, cranberry, strawberry, kiwi, orange, blueberry, raspberry, grapes, grapefruit. Also some exotic fruits like noni, acai berry, goji berry, pomegranate, mangosteen. I have been consuming the exotic fruits on a daily basis has actually helped me lower my blood pressure from 150/100 to 119/85 in a few months without any prescribed medication. I have more energy to exercise which has also helped me to lose weight (I've gone from a size 12-6). The acne on my skin has cleared up as well. My whole life has changed.
Eating your fruits & vegetables is more then just a slogan we kids swear our parents just use to make us miserable when we ask for a cookie. They were actually making us stronger to fight off disease like our favorite superhero on tv...mine being Wonder Woman :) To me, antioxidants are actually better then diamonds...they are a girls best friend :)
