Nosebleed due to High Blood Pressure

By jhoomar Tuesday, February 19, 2008

My 75 year old mother has had high blood pressure for many years and has been taking Amlodipine (5mg) for it. For the last 4 nights consequetively she has had nosebleed due to high BP (it went up to 110/190). The doctor cauterized her nose and started her on Cozaar (100 mg) a couple of days ago but she still had a nosebleed yesterday (not excessive though). Does the new medication take some time to stabilize the blood pressure? Any thoughts on what will help with the situation?

Thanks!!

Thanks so much for your post.  I am a moderator for the site and though not medically trained I can help find answers to your questions or  at least guide you in the right direction.

I searched our site and was able to find information on both Amlodipine and Cozaar

Hoping this can help until you can contact your doctor.

Thanks again and all the best, sue

Hi All!

I too had major nosebleeds that lasted for about two weeks. True, I had higher-than-normal BP during that time, but that may have been due to the bleeding that really worried me, and a possible sinus infection from an allergy medication I was taking.

One thing I realized was that my nasal passages were becoming dried out, a likely cause (at least in my case) of the bleeding. I got a humidifier for my bedroom and began using Ayr saline gel and spray to keep the passages moisturized. It's been working like a charm!
