high and low blood pressure readings

By OCEANBLUE Monday, March 03, 2008

Hi everyone -

I have recently lost 12 pounds - gave up drinking 2 months ago - and I have had a change in my blood pressure.  I was on 25 MG of Atenolol which I have been on for the past four years, and I was getting readings in the low 100's over the low 70's for the past week.  I did a reading today and it was 132/98 which really worried me.  My cardiologist took me off of Benicar about a week ago because he said I was too over-medicated and it was causing my heart to speed up at nights.  Now that I am on just the atenolol - I have had good readings, but now today, I didn't.  I want to get off the medication totally.  I have made lifestyle changes and I get one bad reading which is very upsetting and frustrating to me.   Do I let it ride and see what my reading would be in a week?

Dear OCEANBLUE:

Thanks so much for your post.  I am a moderator for the site and though medically trained I will try to hep find answers to your questions.

It seems you really need to consult with your physician on this.

Yuo may, in the meantime, want to review the contact on our High Blood Pressure Treatment section.

All the best, sue

It was the stopping benicar that did that.  I was on benicar for awhile but lost weight and I was getting low readings and the doctor told me to stop the benicar.  In a weeks time my blood pressure shot up.  I went to the ER and the ER doctor told me about the rebound effect.  Sometimes with medicines like benicar you have to be weaned off not stop suddenly.  Because benicar that a week or more to get into your system/or out that is why it took about a week for the blood pressure to go up.  I started back on the benicar (40mg) and it took a week for my blood pressure to go low again.  That was 3 months ago.  I am now on 5mg of benicar and hope to be off completely soon.  I was weaned slowly (40mg to 20mg to 10mg to 5mg).  I think more people need to know about rebound (maybe more doctors) because until it happened to me I never heard of blood pressure meds doing that.
