Took 64 year old father to hospital emergency room Monday night with a blood pressure of 208/110. His other symptoms were headache, slurred speech, weak right side of body and loss of balance. Before this father had never been to doctor or hospital for any other symptoms, etc. always very healthy.
Hospital did a CT scan of head, EKG, chest xray, blood and urine check. Results from test were all good so he was administered medicine to lower this blood pressure. After getting his pressure down to 178/86 he was released and told to follow up with his family doctor the next day. I was concerned that maybe he had experienced a stroke. But, the doctor did not mention a stroke. So, Tuesday I made him an appointment with a cardiologist. This doctor examined him, reviewed records from hospital, gave him another prescription for a second blood pressure pill and told him to come back in two week. My question is shouldn't we be concerned about the slurred speech and his right side being weak? These issues were not addressed and I am very confused. Of course he is receiving all kinds of comments on what he needs to do from other family members. He is concerned because he is wondering if he is going to return to normal after taking the blood pressure medicine - which seems to be working - his pressure is down to 148 (not sure of bottom number). Any comments, etc. would be appreciated. Is this normal treatment by physicians?
