I am presently taking Norvasc to lower high blood pressure.  Recently I took my blood pressure at home and, leaving the cuff on, I took 6 different readings, one right after the other, just taking time in between to press the Off button on the machine, & then the Start button.  The first reading was 148/77.  Each next reading was lower significantly, with the last (6th) reading being 115/55 !!  I've never taken more than 2 consecutive readings before.  In the past, the 2nd reading was always somewhat lower - as much as 10 points lower on the top #.  I always figured that for the 1st reading I'm nervous that the reading will be high, & then for the 2nd reading I'm not so worried.  But going from 148/77 to 115/55 in less than 5 minutes ?????  Is that possible?  Does that happening to other people?  Or is my machine not working properly (The cuff goes on the arm on my machine, & inflates automatically) -  Would appreciate hearing from others on this. Thanks.

Mine jumps around up and down with every machine i've tried, so I usually wait at least 30 secs between each reading, then usually will use the reading that I get most often.  I try to get 3 in a good range together, but doesn't always happen.  I'm currently on no meds; all cause unbearable side effects.  Choleteral low, weight normal...on thin side, exercise almost every day, eat right.  I,nor my doc don't know what else i can do.  Currently waiting for another apptmt w cardiologist to see if he still thinks we will stay status quo.  (Have ventricular arrythmias which I believe causes the oscillations).  Needless to say when I'm in the doc's office, my bp skyrockets!

BP machine I use recommends waiting 3 minutes between tests.  Maybe that will give you a more consistent reading Laughing

Thank you so much for replying -- At least I feel I'm not alone.  Sorry I took so long to get back to you - I'd done my post on someone else's computer, & after I couldn't remember how to get to the website/postings. I'm worried now that maybe I have ventricular arrythmia also (you said you believe that's what's causing the oscillations for you).  I guess I should ask the dr. about it next visit.  And yes, my readings are also always much higher at the Dr.'s office - especially whatever dr. is following my blood pressure.  If it's a gynecologist or another dr. who doesn't concern themselves with my blood pressure it's not as high.  Just goes to show how much our mind plays a part.  Have you tried yoga? meditation?  Just plain old deep slow breathing whenever you remember to do it ?  All those might help.  Laughing also helps a lot.  One time I was in the doctor's office and my reading was very high.  The nurse then told me to imagine I was at the beach in Jamaica & some gorgeous guy was running after me in the water, etc.  She made me laugh.  Then she took my blood pressure again (all this within less than about 2 minutes) & the top # dropped 45 points !!  (my top # is the one that runs high at times.  Bottom # is almost always good).  So laugh as much as you can.  Norvasc doesn't give me any side effect at all (at least nothing I know of).  At one point a doctor added a water pill but that raised my cholesterol.  I hope things went well with the cardiologist.  Again, thank you so much for your post.

Dear Island girl

I have the same result. I have not started taking any BP pill yet, but since I found my bp is getting high, I kept on chckeing it on a daily basis. I am so surpirzed by the first time result it went 148/99, and then the second time 139/88... I donot know yet the verdict on this, but I am going to see a doctor soon. But, you are not alone.
