Erratic blood pressure readings

By Concerned Mom Tuesday, February 12, 2008

My 20 year old daughter was in the ER last night and got different readings in her blood pressure when she sat, stood and laid down.  She is concerned that she has a heart problem that is causing this.  The hospital was very unclear on what this could be causing this.

She was diagnoised with a bad Urinary tract infection, which was causing dizziness, and fevers.  She has a history of asthma, and takes medications to control that. She also takes anxiety medication.

Could the erratic blood pressure be caused by her medications?  Or do we need to consider that she may have a heart problem.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Dear Concerned Mom - Thanks so much for your post and so sorry for the delay in response. I am a moderator for this site and am glad to try and help answer your question or guide you in the right direction.

I will say that I am not medically trained, so it is very important you seek professional medical guidance for the symptoms your daughter has exhibited. In the meantime, let's see what information we might have available to you.

I searched our site and was able to find a few items that might help.

First, you should read our section The Basics of High Blood Pressurehypertension, the effects of aging, diagnosis tools and more. which discusses everything from general information on

As well, read the text on High Blood Pressure Symptoms and maybe use our Check a Symptom tool.

I hope this information helps. It would be great to hear how she is doing and what you may have learned since your post.

All the best, sue

Dear Mom:  I just read your posting in my own research, for a similar thing.  I've stumbled upon a disorder known as "multiple system atrophy" formerly Shy-Drager Syndrome.  Many physicians are not even aware of this serious disorder yet, and it can take years to diagnose.  If your daughter has this, it is not so much a heart problem, but a neurological one.  I am a 51 yr-old nurse who has been disabled for 10 years due to multiple medical problems that keep growing.  This could be the latest.  I've been working with my docs since June and I'm getting no relief, or answers.  I plan to discuss this at my next visit.  It's holiday season.  My wish is that your daughter is well, and happy; and that you never read this. Love, Mom of 3 daughters, 17,23, & 30.
