2 BP pills day, high in am

By Ed Hughes Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Two blood pressure pills being taken daily 1 at 9pm & 1 at 9am. BP readings are taken before each pill. The reading at 9pm is respectable (155/76). The readings at 9am are too

high 173/107, 157/93, 180/94, 192/110. BP pill is ATENOLOL 50mg. Have experminted

with 2 pills at 9pm & the am reading is still high.

So, question is. what would be reason(s) for BP elevating while asleep ?

Thanks for your post Ed.  The only way you will know for sure is by asking your own doctor about this.  Is it possible to morning reading are high not while you are asleep, but as you actaly rise and move around, etc.  You really must check with your treating physician.

In the meantime, you can review our High Blood Pressure Treatment area.  YOu may also want to see our medications area.

Hope this helps.  All the best, sue

I had the same problem with my blood pressure when i was first told I had it.

I was put on two medications, atentolol, and clonodine. My blood pressure was always high in the morning. I could feel it all over my body with the pounding. I was sent to a endocrinologist. The tested me and found me to have a kidney condition called, hyperaldosderone. It has to do with the shape of my adrenal gland. Because of this my body unloads the hormome aldosderone in my blood every moring. So by 9:00 am, my blood pressure was at one time 200/177. I know thats high, that was before the pills. After that it was still high, running 160/101 etc. I am now on a pill called, spirolactine.

I no longer take the clonidine, I still take the atentolol, for the pounding.

my pressure runs now 98/62,101/72,135/76.  I has been lower in the begining. I feel better and, my range stays like that all day. I would suggest you have a kidney doctor, or an endocrinologist look at you.

Good luck,

Dana

I am Paula.  I just read your post today after coming back from my doc's office with a 2nd rx for HBP.  9 years ago (3 mos after the birth of my only child) my BP went way high.  It was perfectly normal while pregnant (even on the low side sometimes).  My GP put me on calan.  That didn't do anything.  Then she put me on atenolol.  To no avail.  Finally she added altace.  No change.  She decided it was way above her level of expertise and sent me to a cardiologist.  He did an Ultrasound of my heart - all OK.  Then he decided to check my kidneys as they sometimes cause HBP.  In doing so, he found a tumor on my right adrenal gland.  Now I needed a new specialist.  I saw an endocrinologist who eventually diagnosed hyperaldosteronism.  In the meantime, I developed kidney stones in that kidney which had to be pulverated.  After the diagnosis, I saw an endocrine surgeon who removed my right adrenal gland.  That caused a sudden influx of chemicals to attack my heart.  LSS  - I don't jhave HBP from that gland anymore.  Fast forward --- now the other is affected:(   Paula

You might have sleep apnea. That could cause it to be that high in the am.
