As melatonin induces sleep and peaks at night, people who work the graveyard shift, as I do, would likely either to fall asleep at work, or be sleep-deprived. I myself am prone to sleep deprivation, and have stayed awake for as much as 50 hours straight, maybe more. Such prolonged wakefulness occurs during my long bike rides on my day off, which begin immediately after work. One notable example was on 10/17/2001, when I rode my bike to Santa Cruz, 36 hours round-trip. I was awake for the entire trip. As I work nights, I am at risk of being run down by a sleepy motorist. I have learned about the possibility of a law that considers a drowsy driver to be impaired, and thus can be held liable for any damage or injury caused by driving while impaired.

Dear Dr. William Davis,

I have sleeping problem and BP of 85~135. I've used melatonin for a month before I stop a week ago. After I stopped it, I really feel very uncomfortable in this week. BP goes higher to 90~140. I don't know whether I should continue to use it and for how long it's safe.

Thanks
