getting higher

By william Wednesday, February 13, 2008
Just a little cnocerned ,everytime I go to our local shoppers drug mart I check pressure on the machine and everytime it gets higher . This time it says 151/101 pulse 89 and I feel absolutely fine I know I`m a bit over weight but I`ve always hovered between 220 pds and 245. My arms are fairly large so could this explain maybe a faulty reading?

Dear William,

Thanks so much for you post. I am a moderator for this site and I hope I can help find an answer to your questions or at least guide you in the right direction.

I'm not medically trained, but there is alot of information available on our site that can help to educate you about high blood pressure. However, the first this you really should do is to speak to your doctor and get a professional evaluation and diagnosis. If you do not have a doctor you could use our locator - its helps to find a doctor or hospital in your area.

You can read about the general aspects of hypertension in the Basics of High Blood Pressure. As well, there are a number of risk factors associated with this disease. You can find more information on this in our Causes and Risks area.

Please let me know if you need help with other questions. And please come back to post an update for us - stay in touch.

All the best, sue

In similar circumstances, I have been going to Shoppers accross the street and my results consistently showed about 136/198. I was worried until yesterday. I went to my family doctor who checked measurements from the last twelve months. They consistent indicating my blood pressure as 120/80. These measurements were recorded in three different medical offices. I asked for a verification and the results were again 120/80.

Advice? Do not trust the results you get from self examination at Shoppers Drug Mart.
