high blood pressure and exercise

By crowns Monday, March 03, 2008
my mother has high blood pressure, she's overweight. I keep telling her to go jogging with me, but she always brings up her high blood pressure. when she has gone with me, she will not jog, because of her blood pressure. she says she needs to start slow, i agree, but slow does not mean walking  for a week she doesn't really pick up the pace, at all. when she gets winded, she slows down. i think she could start jogging, but then again i'm not a doctor. so my question. does exercise need to be taken that carefully for her, or can i push her to a jog here and there?

Dear Crowns:

Thanks so much for your post.   I am a moderator for this site and though not medically trained I wil try to answer your questions for you.

The first recommendation is that you seek a professional evaluation for exercise for your mom.  If she has been diagnosed with high blood pressure then it can be assumed she is being treated for this and can seek advice from her doctor. Like anything else, it is so important to have someone who understands the medical ramifications to an action (like jogging) review the details with you and your mom.

In the meantime take a look at our lifestyles section to see many things that can help those with high blood pressure.

All th best, sue
