Low blood volume, High Blood pressure

By Apalia Sunday, April 13, 2008

My comment is twofold. First, I am wondering if I have low blood volume. I cannot donate blood due to passing out at about the 1/2 pint range. I am not nervous about giving blood but each of the several times I've tried to donate, I get different degrees of almost passing out with the last try passing out cold. However, I have high blood pressure without medication. Just read an article that says low blood volume could be a cause of hypotension. I am wondering if high blood pressure could also be a cause of low blood volume. Also, I am wondering how I can find out what is the cause of my high blood pressure. Is there a test to figure this out?

Dear Apalia:  Thanks for your post.  i'm the moderator for the site and though not medically trained, can help you find answes to your questions or at least lead you in the right direction.

I'm searching for information on the low blood volume part of your question and will get back to you.

In the meantime, you can review our Causes and Risk Factors section for the other part of your question.

All the best, sue

i'm not a professional or anything but i'm a nursing student. low blood volume means it's harder for the heart to get blood around the body. (less stuff to push, harder to get to destination) so this causes the heart to overscompensate by increasing the pressure. so since you don't have enough blood, the heart has to push harder to get blood to your body parts. this is why low blood volume can cause high blood pressure. usually drinking water and keeping hydrated helps, since that increases blood volume. but this sounds more than just dehydration. ask your doctor if you need medication.

hope this helped!
