Medication for White Coat Hypertension?

By gdwitch Sunday, February 03, 2008
I have very high BP readings at doctor's visits, yet my blood pressure is normal to normal low at home.  This has been going on for quite some time.  My cholesterol is great, my triglycerides are great, so is my thyroid, and my cardiogram was good.  I am thin, don't drink, don't smoke, exercise an hour a day and have a good diet and no hypertension family history.  My doctor had prescribed for me a beta-blocker, saying it will help with my anxiety, but I am afraid to take it.  What if I take a beta blocker with normal blood pressure and heart rate?  Will I become faint, weak, dizzy, etc?  Will it slow my heart too much. My doctor tells me it will have no affect if my pressure is normal but unless I have more information, I can't bring myself to take it.

Hello gdwitch.  Thanks for posting to our site.  I am a moderator here and though not medically trained, I hope to be able to answer your questions or guide you in the right direction.

The first thing is you should always go back to your doctor if you have questions.  And in some cases, it might be wise to seek a second opinion if you are not comfortable with the results you are getting now.

As well, it seems the information you need is related to taking high blood pressure medication.  I searched our site and found some info on drugs that are used to treat high blood pressure.  I'm not sure what you are taking speciafically, so just review what we have online and see if the info you need is there.  I also think you might want to read our Prevention and Treatment text.

Hope this helps - let us know if you have other questions.  Thanks much.

All the best, sue
