My name is Lisa and I am 36 years old.  I smoke a pack a day and I am a heavy beer drinker (more than 4 per day).  I have been on BP meds for 8 to 9 years.  Initial dosage 50 mg of atenolol and 37.5 mg of a diuretic.  This dosage worked until a year and a half ago.  I've changed medicines and dosages several times and I am becoming increasing frustrated.  I have seen BP numbers that scare me, the highest being 178/117 which happened last summer of last year. I was on Avalide at the time.  I went to the dr yesterday on 100mg of atenolol and 10mg of plendil.  BP 147/108.  He increased the plendil to 20mg.   I am cutting back on the smoking and drinking but I have not seen any results.  I just don't know what to do.  I have made an appointment to see another dr on Friday.  What's happening?

Does anyone know about supplements that help lower blood pressure?

Ive been reading about how coq10 can lessen the need for blood pressure meds.

Is that true? I found some info about it here:

Dr Gandelman,

It goes without saying that life insurance companies are really looking for the same thing in clients as you look for in patients. Compliance with medication and other health suggestions lead to good control. For you this is a healthier patient and for life insurance companies, a substantially better risk. The "Silent Killer" doesn't have to control a person's life. To learn more about how to get the best life insurance rates if you have high blood pressure, go to www.hinermangroup.com.

I am a 57 year old female with very high blood pressure.  I have been hospitalized twice with pressure of 225 over 140.  I am very thin, very athletic and have a very healthy diet.  I currently take 60 mil. of Benicar per day and while it helps a good day is still 165 over 90.  I have tried every other drug and/or combination thereof that is on the market.  Either the side effects are too extreme or it does not work for me.  I have shortness of breath and the beginnings of heart problems.  With the exception of arthritic like symptoms caused I believe by the Benicar I am healthy.  I have also tried specialists in this field and no one seems to have any better advice.  By the way my stress level is low to average.  So I am hoping you will be able to advise me.  I seem to fall into a small group that whose pressure does not respond to anything.  Can you help?

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Tam

I am an avid bicylist with hypertension, sometimes severe. On 3/2/2008, my blood pressure was  217/116. The next day it was 226/98. On 2/14/2006 it was 207/123. On one occasion my blood pressure was 239/57! I have been recording my blood pressure since 1988, and posted at http://sparkysdiabetes.blogspot.com

HI there!

I read your post and I am iin almost the same situation.

My blood pressure level is very high for someone who is 37.

Just wondering what the doctors have advised you to do?

Did you have to take some pills to bring this down because I am freaking out now cuz I'm getting headaches in the back of my head.

Hope to hear from you and if you could pass on any advice it would be very much appreciated.

Hope all is well with you and you are on the recovery to good health.

Our blood pressure varies throughout the day. It is supposed to, so that the rest of your body continues to work at its best. Your B/P depends on what you are doing around the time you took your blood pressure and it also depends on what you have eaten and the amount of stress your body is having at the moment. Having the right size blood pressure equipment also makes a difference. You can check the size chart at http://www.bloodpressurechart.us and make sure you are using the correct blood pressure equipment.

I found out last week that I had high blood pressure (150/109). The Dr said he wanted to monitor me for a month. My wife is a distributor for nutritional products and following her recommendations, four days later, I measured at 123/69. No kidding. If you are interested in hearing more of what worked for me; send me a message.

I had stage 1 hypertension and needed to get it down because I have had an occasional bout of atrial fibrillation. I was put on a beta blocker and calcium channel blocker. I have found that there are usually alternative remedie for many problems so I did some research. I check my blood pressure each day and at this time I am cutting my meds in half and my blood pressure has been dropping. I do several things.

1. I found that losing a few pounds has made a big difference.

2. I drink allot of water with a little salt in it (check out the water cure on the internet)

3. I tried some celery stalks a few time and found that it imediately lowered my blood pressure. I now take celery seed extract capsules  that I get at the health food store. I am not sure if it works as well as the celery but it apparently has the same chemical that is known to lower blood pressure.

I don't know why most many people do not consider alternative medicines. Some are snake oil but many work as well or better that prescription meds. Just do a little research and try some things.

3/19/10 4:21pm

Snake oil....you dont need that. My mom suffered until she went to a nutritionist that specializes in non abrasive techniques...she transformed my mom's life....I openly tell everyone with this problem so they too can free freed of this...my email is locrian2000@aol.com email me and I will get the info to you

People need to understand how important it really is to be within the healthy blood pressure range as it is the silent killer.

I bought a blood pressure log from bloodpressurelog.net that helped me keep track of my BP for a year it had some tips and broke down the tech. terms of blood pressure.  I take it to show my doctor that way we have a better idea what my BP is normally.  It puts me at ease just knowing what it is. That alone may lower it.

I agree that using a blood pressure monitor at home is a good way to check your blood pressure as often as you want that helps you control it better. It can also warn you if there's something wrong with your health before it becomes more serious symptom.

BloodPressureMonitorsNow.com

">Blood pressure monitors</a> are an excellent tool for maintaining a healthy blood pressure level throughout the day.  Best bet is to take measurements at various intervals throughout the day and record the average.  The automatic devices are the most convenient to use for the average person, and they're fairly inexpensive too.

Monitoring blood pressure on a regular basis is a sure way to stay on top of where you're at in term of heart health as well as overall general health.  Great website.  I'll check back regularly.

Minipress can also be used with Reynaud’s disease, congestive heart failure, and to relieve prostate enlargement symptoms like urinary urgency/hesitancy-It works by relaxing the blood vessels. I purchased Minipress online at www.medsheaven.com

Blood pressure is the driving force that causes blood in the body of the arteries to flow (where the pressure is high), the organs and veins (where the pressure is low). Blood pressure is systolic pressure in the arteries when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood through the arteries..... http://martyslive.com

When one quits smoking, the blood pressure often comes down. When one quits drinking, the effect is not always so fast and so clear. It takes much longer to normalize the body's inner workings again.

Stick with the non-smoking/non-drinking policy for half a year to a year. Add some moderate exercises like walking, swimming, biking (no weight liftig, competitive spoirts!), yoga, meditation, and see if it helps.

I recently came across a study in the Journal of Human Hypertension, that chiropractic adjustments were better in lowering blood pressure than 2 medications combined!

Patients who had chiropractic adjustments over an 8 week period saw an 8-14 mm Hg drop in blood pressure! It would've taken a minimum of 112 pills to see the same results, not to mention the side effects that come with it!

Imagine the possibilities!

Hello.  I am a 57 year old male with a family history of heart and kidney disease.  My BP had increased to 145/90.  After an unsuccessful try of diuretics, my doctor recommended that I start taking ACE inhibitors (Enalapril).  Over three months, the Enalapril has decreased my BP to about 128/70.

My concern is the negative effects that Enalapril might be producing in my body.  I have the "dry cough" that most get and I can deal with that.  I'm just concerned that OTHER things might be happening that might create real problems later on.

Has anyone else been taking ACE inhibitors for awhile?  What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

What is the right way to take BP measurement? When I go to the Dr, they take it while I am on the exam table with my legs hanging off the table and my arm straight down. Readings are always in 130 to 140 over 80 to 100. And they will not take a second reading.

Yesterday, I took my wrist cuff in and showed the Dr. readings for 3 weeks that were all below 130/80. Then I showed him if I sat in a chair (upright and with feet on florr and arm at heart level, my BP was 10 points lower than he just read. He said wrist cuffs weren't accurate but a retest with his arm cuff (while in the chair) was within 4 points of the wrist cuff.

I don't know if my BP is elevated or not. I suspect the error is on my DR's part.

What is the right way to take BP? Are wrist cuffs inaccurate? Why shouldn't I take BP more than 4 times per week (per the DR). Your BP should be your BP even if you take it every 3 minutes. Thanks!

I heard that a diet high in sodium and low in potassium can cause high blood pressure, so cutting down on salt and eating foods high in potassium could help control or even reverse this disease. I learned this at a good little site i found http://highbloodpressure.celebrityvolcano.com/ Check it out!!

Very useful information. I strongly believe that high blood pressure or hypertension can be controlled without medication. Methods are very simple but do require a lot of dedication and discipline. Feel free to check out my blog on controlling hypertension without drugs. I have researched these methods and tested them successfully on myself. http://controlhypertensionwithoutdrugs.blogspot.com/

According to Ayurveda, high blood pressure involves all the doshas, the heart, and the blood vessels. We can see signs and symptoms of derangement of vata dosha mainly that of 'Vyana vayu' in high blood pressure. People with Pitta and Vata predominante constitution and Pitta and Vata imbalance, are more prone to hypertension than any other. Unprocessed anger, frustration, irritability, anxiety and fear leads to mal-adaptation of the endocrine system, which then leads to conditions like hypertension. Treatment is based on bringing these imbalances back to normal. In the treatment of hypertension; nutrition, exercise, breathing exercises (Pranayama), yoga, meditation, behavioral modification along with various herbs and minerals are prescribed. The following products will help you to normalize your blood pressure.http://bestnaturaltreatments1.blogspot.com/
