By Glenn Gandelman, MD, MPH, Health Pro Tuesday, January 16, 2007
I noticed that after I exercise for about 60 minutes my blood pressure drops. What causes the drop in blood pressure?Blood pressure normally rises during exercise. However, after exercise stops, blood pressure quickly returns to normal. An individual who can exercise for 60 minutes is likely quite f...

Great response that put me at ease. I recently had a nuclear stress test and pushed myself to the stops; a full 13 1/2 minutes and bpm at my 100% max rate. I was starting to feel too light headed and dizzy for a good cool down; I rapidly went from light headed to significantly black spotted vision and only inches away from blacking out. I was feeling almost back to normal when my bp ROSE to 105/55. Notes: my bp meds were recently lowered from 20 mg lisinopril to 10 mg lisinopril. My baseline bp prior to the treadmill test was 105/62. Assuming a positive review of my stress test and I'm hoping to be off of bp meds.

Quitting smoking takes time, but believe me is possible. Best decision I ever made.

Good health to everyone. Thanks for the response Doc.

trying to understand if my drop in B.P. after exercise is a positive or negative.  I rode fifty five miles on my bike yesterday at a quick pace in weather that consisted of 95 degree heat with very high humidity.  I took my BP prior to and after riding.

Before the ride my BP was at 140 over 90 which is my normal BP (yes high)..  Afterwards, my BP registered 105 over 88.  Is this a sign of good health, poor health, or something else?  Just trying to understand.

I have exactly the same issues. My blood pressure if I am static for a few hours at work can rise to 160/85.

If I exercise hard for 45 minutes to an hour it can drop as low as 95/50.

I took my blood pressure the very instant I finished working out - still breathing hard and pulse running at 100 and I was 131/74. It dropped down to 109/65 in the next 15 minutes and slowly climbed up to 140/82 in the next 3 hours.

My current health strategy is to work out 30-45 minutes twice a day as this gives me almost a full day with nice low blood pressure. I have noticed I have a tendancy to hold my breath at times during the day but my breath is steady when I exercise and wonder if this is the issue.
