Q: My mother-in-law, who is 82 yrs old, has been experiencing BP spikes in the a.m. hours.

These episodes of high BP have been acompanied by what she describes as a "pinging" in her head.  She also described it as hearing her heartbeat in her head.  She doesn't communicate very well and so it is difficult for us to understand what she is experiencing.  She has been to the doctor at least 3 times in the last few weeks and dr. is trying to regulate her BP by trying different meds.  Every time she starts a new med it seems to lower her pressure intially(has been as good as 120/80), but then after a few days it starts climbing again.  The highest she's experienced is around 188/90.  To worsen things, she panics everytime she gets this sensation and so I think anxiety adds to her distress.  Any ideas what could be going on?  I've read that early morning BP spikes can be a precursor to a stroke.  However, she's not having any other stroke symptoms.

Hi Sammy,

Here are two possibilities you may want to explore:

1. Sleep apnea can lead to blood pressure spikes in the a.m.

2. Heart palpitations may be related to the "heartbeat in her head".

All the best,
