Q: my friend tells me her BP is 427 over 212 and refuses to get treatment...

She is 5' 11' and weighs 130...with a BP of 427/212....and does not consider it a serious health risk....what can I do as a friend...?   I have been sick since I found out and I cannot help but think she could stroke out or have a heart attack at any time..  Also...she smokes at least a pack of cigarrettes a day...

thank you for your time and consideration....mark

On another note.....can severe high blood pressure be eligible for SS Disability?  Curious, because she says she cannot get sick because she has to work...in my opinion...with the responsibility to care for her child and work as a single mom, she might feel like she has no options.  I want to help her if I can....

thank you again.....I really do appreciate your time  :0)

P.s.  She thinks there will be serious side effects if she takes any Blood Pressure medication....is this true?

Hi Livewyre,

You have every reason to be considered. Your friend needs to see a physician to receive treatment. Unfortunately, all you can do is continue to encourage her to take action. I'm not aware of disability coverage for someone with high blood pressure. As far as medication, all medications come with potential side effects. However, the pros of using medication to control her high blood pressure levels woudl likely outweigh the cons. You may also want to encourage her to make diet and lifestyle changes to lower blood pressure.

All the best,

427 over 212?  She's already dead from the stroke.

There is no way those figures are correct.  It might be high, but not that high.  Even numbers at half that are stroke territory.  She's not overweight (unless that's 130KG), not that you can't have high blood pressure at that weight.  I think she is pulling your leg.
