Q: What could cause my blood pressure to go from normal to high in three months?

I am a 48-year-old Caucasian female.  I am 5 feet tall and weigh 108 pounds.  I do not smoke or drink alcohol.  I exercise occasionally.  My BP readings have always been normal.  I started taking Elavil, 50 mg., for migraine prevention starting July 09.  Yesterday (October 09) went for follow-up visit to discuss Elavil and my BP readings were in the 160's/100's.  Doctor felt this was a fluke, but asked that I purchase a BP monitor and return to see him in three months.  I did purchase a monitor and have checked a few times and it is still elevated in the 160's/100's.  My question is what could cause such a dramatic change in my BP in such a short period of time?  I have never even had an elevated reading before.  The only other medication I take is Lexapro, 10 mg. daily, for GAD, which I have been taking since July 2004.  I'm wondering if the Elavil might be the cause.

Yes Elavil can cause high blood pressure (hypertension). Here is the prescribing information, which lists hypertension as a potential cardiovascular side effect.
