Q: 27 year old male - High BP today, caused by Adderall?

I am a 27 year old male - Last Wednesday 6/17/09 I had my Blood Pressure taken at the doctor and it was 140/81. She explained that this is high, but I am overweight by 50 lbs. I have been exercising 5 times a weeks 25min hard cardio and weights in the mornings. I have lost 35lbs so far.

On Thursday I got back on to my ADD medication Adderall - on that first day of taking it again I checked my BP at the drug store and it was 140/81, so i wasnt too concerned about the medication affecting my BP.

Today, after taking the medication for 5 days, I went to the drug store to check my BP and it was 156/92!

I am concerned that it could be the medication, but wouldnt i have seen this reaction last week?

Can my BP fluctuate naturally 15/11 points? I will continue to lose weight, but I'm wondering if there is anything I should do. I can recheck at the drug store a few more times today.

Hi NikO,

It's recommended that you DO NOT take Adderall if you have moderate to severe high blood pressure.  I encourage to discuss with your physician to determine the appropriate treatment plan for yourself.

Congratulations on the 35 pound weight loss - fantastic!  Stick with it.  The weight loss will help you control your blood pressure.

All the best,

Thank you Lisa, Ive rechecked again over the past few days and have recorded:

136/86

134/78

142/86

138/84

I think the high number was an anomaly.  I spoke with my physician and figured if it continues to stay near my pre medication levels I can continue for the time being.
