Link between high blood pressure and birth control?

Jmissydj

At my yearly visit a few days ago, I discovered I have high blood pressure.  If this is due to taking birth control, will it go down fairly quickly, having stopped taking the pill?

Thank you!

Hi Jmissydj,

Another individual asked a question regarding birth control.  You can read the Q&A here - http://www.healthcentral.com/high-blood-pressure/c/question/79456/38192.

I don't think you read my question in its entirety.  I had read her question, and it's actually an entirely different situation than mine.  My blood pressure is continuously high, while it seems like hers was a temporary thing.

Agreed, your situations are different but the information on birth control and blood pressure applies to both:

Birth control pills may increase blood pressure, although it tends to be rare side effect. The risk of high blood pressure increases with age (>35 yo) and how long you've been on the pill.

As far as how quickly blood pressure would decrease if birth control was discontinued - I do not know the answer to that.  Since a connection between birth control and blood pressure is rare, there may be no change when birth control is stopped.  Your physician would be a good resource or maybe someone else will jump in here with an answer.
