Q: I was diagnosed with high blood pressure in 2005 and has been under control with medication and diet

For the past few weeks my numbers have been within normal limits during the daytime 118/70-120/80; however at night the numbers are frightening 150/90-160/104.  My pulse rate remains the same day and night 56-62 which is my normal.  The numbers are about the same whether sitting or standing and on both arms.  Earlier this year my medication was changed to Bystolic 10mg daily.  I take aspirin 81mg daily and have no other medical issues.

A little history,  I severed a long term relationship 2 years ago (not dating at this time),   I relocated to another state last month, and  I work from home.  I have gained about 20 pounds over the past two years.  At times I feel the added tension throughout my body but why does my pressure only go up at night and is normal during the day?  What could be the cause?

Hi Concerned,

One possible cause of elevated night time and early morning blood pressure is sleep apnea.  I recommend being evaluated by your physician to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
