Q: Is the ankle an accurate method of checking blood pressure?

A friend is getting dialysis. Her arms hurt so they used her ankle to monitor her blood pressure. Is the ankle accurate? Can we use the home blood pressure kit on her ankle to check her blood pressure?

Hi Curious,

The ankle is obviously not the standard protocol for monitoring blood pressure, but it is an option.  I recommend discussing with her physician/nurse so you can be instructed on the correct way to take an ankle measurement if you'd prefer to use her ankle.

All the best,

Norvasc is in a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. Norvasc relaxes (widens) the blood vessels (veins and arteries), making it easier for the heart to pump and reducing its workload. Norvasc is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and to treat angina (chest pain).
