Q: my blood pressure reads 120/59 pulse rate 70. is this ok?

i have been taking my blood preussre regualrly and i have a low diastolic reading. What does this mean?

Thanks for your question. 


The blood pressure and pulse that you have supplied are perfect.  Normal pulse rate is between 60 and 100.  Normal blood pressure systolic is less than 130, and diastolic less than 80.  59 is still in an acceptable range, and low readings are not alarming as long as there are no symptoms of low blood pressure (lightheadedness, dizziness, especially on standing). 


You should know, however, that performing your own blood pressure monitoring is not a substitute for regular check-ups with your physician, who will check your history and perform a physical examination.  He will also be sure that you follow recommended guidelines for screening of cholesterol levels; immunizations; and cancer screening.
