BP meds upped to 320mg Diovan. Took 2x160 to use up and OK. 1 x 320mgs made me ill. Any reason?

Last week my doc increased my Diovan from 160 to 320mgs because I have problems with many BP drugs and my BP was climbing. I used up my 160mgs taking 2 a day together felt fine for a week. Today started 1 x 320mgs. About 3 hours later I was sick, thought I was fainting and felt like I was choking and had to lie down for a while. BP yesterday had dropped to 114/55 and because this was very  low I checked it 2 hourly and  got 127/56 and 105/60. Later in the evening it was  124/69. Today I am 133/78 and during the 'attack' it shot up to 168/110.

Now settled 3 hours later at 147/78 and I feel better now. My readings used to be anything from 130/75  -  200/130. Any idea what happened please?

Pat,

Thanks for your question.  Sorry to hear you are having problems.  I really cannot blame the difference from 2 x 160 mg to 1 x 320, which is equivalent.  It can take a week or two to see the full effect of a change in dosage.  I'm wondering if your pressure didn't drop too low resulting in your symptom.  I know that you recorded a high (168/110) during the attack, but could this have been a rebound response to the pressure bottoming out?  Your pressure readings otherwise are acceptable.

You need to contact your physician about this episode.  Because your pressure goes up and down (you said your prior readings ranged from 130/75 - 200/130), it might be time to look for possible causes of your high blood pressure, such as a kidney problem, vascular abnormality, or problem with an adrenal gland, as well as other possibilities.  Your doctor will know what to do.

The bottom line here, you have to find the cause, if any.  If there is no cause, then you have essential hypertension, and you need to get control before there is any end-organ damage.

Feel better.

My doctor upped my diovan/HCT 160/12.5 to 320/25.  I am taking two of the 160/12.5 at the present time as I have several of them.  Just started this on Monday so have only taken it two times.  Tonight my BP is running between 180 - 216.  Why this sudden increase in my BP.  I know I am upset from seeing these figures so each time I take my BP, it is higher than the time before.  I feel okay.  I have type 2 diabetes but it is under control.  I take one 500 metformin for that.  Oh, yes, I also take 50 mg of Atenolol for BP.
