Q: I am a 28 year old male and was diagnosed with high blood pressure over a month ago.

My blood pressure was spiking as high as 210/105 and no lower than 140/87.  Before going on medication I was asked to take the average of 12 readings taken over 3 days and that was 176/89.  My dr placed me on an 80mg dose of Micardis (Telmisartan) and a few days later once blood work came back he added Simvastin 40mg for cholesterol.  Almost 2 weeks went by and my bp was still averaging in the same range as before and so I sought out a cardiologist.  She added a 10mg dose of Coreg CR along with the Micardis because my Pulse rate averaged around 100 and she felt that it would drop my pulse.  I have now been on all 3 meds for almost 2 weeks and I just took my bp and it was 137/84 with a pulse rate of 73.  I am scheduled on Monday for a Nuclear Stress Test; is the fact that I am on 2 higher doses of bp medicine + cholesterol medicine an indication that they may find something during the stress test?  As you can see I am very nervous about it and I know that being nervous probably is not helping my bp.  Your response is greatly anticipated.

No, the stress test may show nothing at all, and probably won't since you are very young and otherwise healthy.  You may have a genetic disposition toward high BP and high cholesterol.

The Coreg dose that you are on is very low.

As a starting point, read this:

You can find it by googling for it.

Just a comment:

When somebody says that you should chill out to reduce stress.

or loose weight or eat less fats or whatever, they are repeating things they have heard from others whether they be doctors or friend or wives.

Learn to research what is going on.  Learn how to find technical journals, even if all you do is get an idea which leads to to another idea.

Normally doctors don't keep up with what is going on unless it is really a big break through, so help him out, research things and then educate him.  If he appreciates your effort and doesn't blow you off, he is a good doctor.  If he don't, there are plenty of fish in the sea.

All this is of course just my opinion.

I was diagnosed with high BP at 29 and took medications for the same. It was not until I was 37 years old did they find after me getting several thoracic aneurysms that I havea congenital condition called coarctation of the aorta. Please get this checked out if you are otherwise healthy. A simple echo will tell you this. Good Luck.
