Q: Help. Question about Clonidine?

Male 44 yo, 5'9, 225 lbs. Dont smoke. 1 hour on elyptical machine 3 times a week, + free weights. I weighed 249lbs 2 years ago. I am trying to lose more weight.

I have been taking Clonodine .02mg for 3 years for hypertension, one pill 4 am then another at 4am. Last July, I began getting very dry sinuses and dry mouth that lasts for 4-5 hours. The symptoms would last through the night, I rarely get more than 1 hour sleep anymore. My doctor said it was an alergy and gave me fluticasone nasal spray and loritadine. But these were drying me out even worse, so I stopped taking these. Then a month ago he put me on antibiotics. No affect on the dryness. I am almost positive it's the Clononidine now.

I want to get off this Clonidine, they do lower my blood pressure (temporarily) then I have to take 1/2 more sometimes. But the side effects cause the drying out, which causes anxiety, which then raises my blood pressure again. I have another appointment to see my doctor in a week.

1) Is there any other drug for hypertension/high blood pressure that wont dry me out so bad?

2) Where is Clonodine in comparrison to other drugs for hypertension? is there any other drug i can mention to him?

Thanks!

Hello rayro,

A known side effect of clonidine is dry mouth.

Because of its side effects (which include dry mouth, drowsiness, light-headedness, and constipation) its requirement for several doses throughout the day to maintain low BP, and its ability to raise BP suddenly, clonidine is rarely used as a first line treatment for blood pressure.

There are many, many, many drugs that can be used to treat hypertension that have fewer side effects and are as effective in lowering blood pressure.  You should definitely ask your doctor to be switched to a different agent.  It is difficult for me to suggest another drug because I do not know the rest of your medical history.

If he does not, you should consider seeing another physician, if possible.  One of the most important things a doctor does is listen to your concerns and it seems he may be not listening to you!

However, do not suddenly stop taking clonidine, however.  It can cause a phenomenon called rebound hypertension, where you blood pressure go very high.  Your doctor can help you taper you usage of the drug to prevent this from happening.

To your health,

Neil MD
