Q: My doctor put me on Clonodine for my high blood pressure. Is this drug safe and it isn't working!

I have been taking 10 mg 2 times daily Clonodine for 2 months for my high blood pressure.  My doc also put me on 20 mg Lisinopril. I have been on both now for about a month.  After my follow up appointment today I was very disappointed. Cry My blood pressure at the doc's office was 163/96.  Something isn't working. He upped the dosage of Lisinopril to 40 mg and continued the Clonodine.   My hands have been broken out in a rash with tiny little water blisters. These blisters will pop and are painful and itchy, then the skin peels.  There are also some places on my shins that are breaking out too.  This is the first time I have ever had this rash.  I have had it now for approx. a month and a half.  I suggested to my doc that it may be the medicine.  He said no.  He went on to say that I have excema.  Again I say something isn't right.  I am a 51 year old female.  I  had a hysterectomy about 20 years ago.  Last night I started to have I guess what you call 'hot flashes' for the first time.  When I woke up my eyes were almost swelled shut.  I feel as though I am falling apart.   This has all happened since I was diagnosed with high blood pressure June 15th.  Can anyone suggest something?

Hi Falling Apart,

I encourage you to continue working with your physician.  If you are not satisfied with your treatment plan there is nothing wrong with seeking a second opinion.  Also, I recommend you make diet and lifestyle changes to promote blood pressure control so you are less dependent on medication.  Here's a link to some information - http://www.healthcentral.com/high-blood-pressure/treatment.html?ic=4019.

All the best,
