Q: What is the blood pressure medication, Coreg CR 20 mg?

How is Coreg CR 20mg diffrent than the regular Coreg (which looks like it is oval in shape other than the one I am using which is a white and yellow capsule?  I understad that it may contain Lastix...is this true.  I have never had a problem with retaining water and wonder why the doctor has prescribed this medication.  Before my heart surgery, I was prescribed Norvasc and Atenenol....why the switch?

Hi Debbye,

Coreg CR contains the same active ingredient as Coreg, which is carvedilol, and they both belong the class of blood pressure lowering medications called an ACE inhibitor. The difference between the 2 medications is the fact that they have different durations of action. Coreg CR lasts longer in the body then regular Coreg does, which means that patients only have to take the CR version once a day compared to twice a day with the regular Coreg. Neither medication contains Lasix. Only your doctor knows why he decided to switch your medications, and I'm sure he would be more then willing to give you an explaination if you were to ask.

Thanks for your question!

Hi Pam,

Coreg CR belongs to a class of medications called an ACE inhibitor. Benicar HCT is a combination product that contains Benicar (an ARB) and HCTZ (which is a diuretic). Benicar and Coreg both work to lower blood pressure in a similar way- they both block causes of high blood pressure from the RAAS pathway, they just block it at different steps of the process. Some doctors may choose to have patients take this combination of medications, while others will choose a different combination to help lower blood pressure.

Thanks for your question!

Jill's response is wrong. Coreg is a beta blocker, not an ACE inhibitor. In fact, it is a combination alpha and beta blocker.

The CR version is the longer acting med and it is dosed once a day. Coreg is not a combination pill as it does not contain a diuretic. For what it it worth, as I am on the drug myself, it is a newer generation beta blocker which has been shown to reduce mortality in congestive heart failure patients. So it is a proven drug with fewer side effects and better results than older beta blockers.

You are correct.  Coreg is a beta blocker not an ACE inhibitor.  Coreg is also used to treat high blood pressure as well as the heart.  To verify this information go to Drugs.com look up Coreg.

My daughter just started on it. she is 13, and has Dilated Cardiomyopathy. She is having a hard time with it. First her blood pressure dropped and now she has terrible stomach pain. Even the carvidilol caused the stomach pain. Is this temporary or is she allergic to it? Thank  you
