Q: Concerned about Mother's BP

My Mother has been having spiked BP of over 200/100 or so give or take 10.  She has never had BP problems.  She is experiencing headaches and some numbness in legs.  The gave her meds that will make it go down some, but still around 140/95 or so.  They have done thyroid, artery test and now they are going to send her to a heart doctor on 11/11.  I am worried about her waiting that long.  She has been to the emergency room 3 times in the last 3 weeks.  This never happened prior to the last few weeks.  No extra stress and not overweight.  I am out of state and tired of waiting on her doctors.  She is 78 and never had problems.  HELP.  What can I do to help her?

Hi BLH,

One step would be to help her evaluate her diet and lifestyle to see if there are any steps she can take to promote a lower blood pressure.  Second, consider speaking with her physician to determine if waiting ~2 weeks is safe in your mothers situation and identify her options.

All the best,
