Q: Is Lasix harmful to someone who has had strokes and aphasia?

My husband had a stroke 8 years ago and a second stroke 1 year ago. He is in a nursing home, paralyzed on his right side and cannot stand or walk at all. He understands what others are saying but cannot make himself understood (aphasia). Because he urinates frequently he wears briefs. The doctor in charge has placed him on Lasix which doesn't make sense to me. His blood pressure is normal according to his long-time private physician. Can you enlighten me as to the possible reason?

Thank you for any information you can share.

Hi Spooks,

Lasix is used to treat many different conditions besides high blood pressure, such as fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or a kidney disorder.  I encourage you to discuss the medication with his physician to determine the reason it was prescribed.

All the best,
