10 mgs of Norvasc bring my pressure to normal, but are the side effects worth this?

Kit Torchia

Is it more beneficial to take 10 mgs of Norvasc which bring the blood pressure to normal 120/80 with the side effects of the swelling of lower extemities, or is it better to take 5 mgs. of Norvasc and have BP 140/85?

Hi Kit,

Thanks for your question. Having high blood pressure can lead to greater heart problems like a heart attack, so in my opinion, I think- at least for the time being- you should continue taking the Norvasc 10mg. I understand that the swelling can be bothersome, and I think you should talk to you doctor about that if it really bothers you. There are many things you can do to lower your blood pressure such as exercising regularly, reducing the salt in your diet, quitting smoking and/or drinking alcohol (if that applies). There are also many different medications available to help lower blood pressure, so again, I would advise talking to your doctor about switching medications if possible.
