Q: Blood Pressure Questions

My sons last doctors appointment his blood pressure was 107/69 now they said that it was a little high but I was wondering what is normal BP for a 7 month old baby? And if his blood pressure stays high what the treatment for that is?

Hi Elisa:

Here is an average blood pressure range for a 6-12 month old: Systolic: 80-100mmHg, Diastolic: 55-65mmHg. Depending on which textbook you look at, the range can vary.  Now it is unusual for blood pressures to be taken on children less than 2 years of age, unless of course, there is an indication for it.

I advise you to speak with your pediatrician or physician to see what he/she would hope for the blood pressure to be at and what type of treatment would be considered if the blood pressure starts to be a problem.  Blood pressure ranges and treatments are going to be individualized, meaning depending on the child and what is going on with the child wil determine what is appropriate. A medication may be an option but typically the first option is to sit and continue to monitor. It's best to not give medications in young children, especially infants, if at all possible.

Best Wishes,

Tara
