Q: My controlled bld.pressure is high could this be caused by an internal problem infection ?

My high blood pressure is controlled with medicine and it has been high the last 2 months and I am scheduled for an internal ultrasound on my pelvic region due to a 4 week long period and discomfort.  My question is could an infection or what ever is wrong internal cause my bld pressure to rise in response to my body trying to deal with what ever is going on in there?

Hello concerned J,

Two points about your question.

One, typically infections do not cause high blood pressure, but low blood pressure.  It has to do with the release of chemical from your immune system and sometimes the bacteria themselves that lower BP.  With an infection, you typically see lower blood pressure, higher heart rate, and a fever.

Two, pain, however can cause an increase in blood pressure, especially if you are in moderate to severe pain all of the time.  You would notice here also an increased heart rate, fast breathing, but no fever.

Whatever you do, discuss your increased blood pressure with your physicians!

To your health,

Neil MD
